Periodontal diagnosis and treatment – St. Apolonia Dental Clinic

Surgical and periodontal conditions — diagnosis and treatment

Periodontitis is an insidious disease of the gums and supporting tissues that can appear at any age. The main cause is bacteria that accumulate in the mouth. They hide in soft plaque and hard tartar. If plaque is not removed in time, inflammation spreads deeper, damages the bone around the tooth, and over time even healthy teeth may be lost.

Poor diet, hormonal changes, genetics, and systemic diseases can also contribute. When we treat periodontitis, a team including a periodontist, dentist, and prosthodontist works together so we can assess the situation from every angle and choose the best approach.

How does treatment proceed?

  • Initial debridement
We first perform deep scaling and root planing to remove the main source of infection. We also teach effective home brushing and interdental cleaning.
  • Surgical phase
In advanced disease we may perform procedures such as curettage or flap surgery to clean very deep periodontal pockets.
  • Supportive care
After stabilisation, ongoing maintenance is essential. We recall patients every three to six months to prevent reinflammation.
